A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is a machine that helps monitor and manage your sleep during the night. These machines are uniquely set to each individual person and can be quite confusing to wrap your head around. Our team is here to answer a few questions you might have about CPAP Machines! So you can have a better understanding of its workings. Let’s discuss!

What is a CPAP machine?

CPAP Machines are built for those who are struggling with bad sleep health and sleep apnea. They provide pressurized air through a mask and measure your breathing rate. This is to ensure you’re getting the optimal amount of air for a good night’s sleep. Each customer has a prescribed level of air pressure that gets monitored. This is through the settings of CPAP machines by their sleep specialists. Room air (not oxygen) is taken in through a filter and pressurized accordingly.

How Does CPAP machine Know When To Alter the Air Pressure?

CPAP machines vary slightly. By measuring resistance, they can detect a collapse of the airway and increase pressure during the night to resolve sleep apnea properly. These devices will also test lower pressures and adjust downward if needed. CPAP machines can measure individuals breathing patterns and are looking for three things:

  1. 30 breaths of stable breathing (roughly 3 minutes)
  2. 5 consecutive snore breaths
  3. 3 obstructive apneas or hypopneas within 2 minutes

If any of those signs occur, AutoRamp gradually increases your air pressure until it reaches your prescribed level. It keeps you and your partner sleeping with lower pressures while you’re awake and a steady, comfortable ramp-up for a better night’s sleep.

As you sleep, the airstream from the CPAP machine pushes against any blockages, opening your airways so your lungs receive plenty of air. Without anything obstructing this flow of oxygen, your breathing doesn’t pause or get stuck. As a result, you don’t repeatedly wake up in order to resume breathing and can finally get the peaceful night sleep you’re needing.
